Universal Marina once owned by the Astor family has seen many changes. During the Second World War the government used the site as an industrial shipyard to construct naval vessels. Post-war, it went back to being a private boatyard constructing small commercial vessels as well as being a traditional yacht yard. During the late 1960s along with the development of materials came a timely ‘boom’ in the private boating industry. Universal expanded to support the new demand and built a 100-berth marina and lifting dock. By the 80s and 90’s, the yard had changed ownership numerous times.
Avia explains: “Something of the soul of the place was lost due to lack of continuity and long term planning.” Such that by 1997, when she purchased the marina, the majority of buildings were in need of significant repair (“colanders!”). More than 50% of the tenants where non-marine related, the buildings lacked vibrancy and were in need of a major ‘make-over’. Despite many years of delay due to stalled planning applications and broader issues regarding the development of the Hamble River as a whole, Avia has worked extensively on the site to significantly upgrade the buildings and environment. “I am pleased to report that we are now in the last stages of redevelopment. My aim is to provide facilities ashore and afloat to create a 21st century marina. My dream is to run the most modern facility in Britain that is part of the community and the environment, without losing that family run, cared for feeling”.
